See Kila Vas and World War 3: Full Detailed Timeline for related existing material. This page covers the United Kaolsan Emirates' founding, its 1976 Imperial coup, and the regional political fallout — including Jonas's arrival as Chief Training Officer of the Empire's Northern Army, predating his eventual break from the Empire.

The United Kaolsan Emirates (UKE)

Established at the end of World War 2 as a joint venture between the Empire and the Kaolsan people — a gesture of peace and goodwill — the UKE is (or was) a sovereign, independent state. Kila Vas serves as its capital. The Empire's "Northern Army" headquartered there since 1940, paying rent to the UKE for the privilege.

Geography: rectangular, slanted northeast, with Kila Vas in the lower-left (coastal) corner; the Rwechyn Oasis (a beautiful, hundred-mile-long coastal oasis, city-state status) in the upper-left corner; Workqib (noted for pyramids and ancient ruins) in the center-east; and Mahas (noted for its underground aquifer, markets, and bazaars, a key caravan stop) in the center-south.

The Mahas Maraji

"The" Mahas Maraji — never simply "Mahas Maraji" — is a defiant living legend, born 1908, who eschews Kaolsan convention requiring women be fully covered in public. She wears translucent veils in public and goes nude at home, a scandalous departure from local norms that has made her both a symbol of rebellion and a cultural fixture of Mahas.

Jonas's Arrival (March 1976)

Jonas and the Janastian Warhawks arrive to train the UKE's Army (120,000 troops and rapidly growing) as Chief Training Officer. The Empire, aware of Jonas's reputation as a brilliant tactician from following his career in Janast, does not yet grasp the full extent of his ability.

Oil and the Coup (March 23, 1976)

Offshore oil, discovered in 1968, transformed the UKE — 5 platforms pumping crude to the sole refinery 12 miles north of Kila Vas. On March 23, 1976, the Commanding Officer of the Empire's Northern Army seizes control of the UKE outright. The Imperial Navy announces plans to establish a "Northern Fleet" headquartered at Kila Vas. The Empire's Central Military Command dispatches a general to Kila Vas — ostensibly to consult, actually to replace the current CO with someone more aligned with the Xapata military command's wartime vision.

Jonas's Position

As Chief Training Officer, Jonas is deliberately excluded from strategic decision-making — the Empire keeps personnel rigidly within their assigned roles. Though initially troubled by the coup, he recognizes its military necessity, while privately observing the Empire's actions and Medaris's countermoves with growing unease. He is not yet permitted to offer strategic opinions.

Regional Fallout: The Kaolsan League and Republics of Waon

The Kaolsan League, the Republics of Waon, and the Kaolsan people — who have never been true allies of the Empire, only tolerating it through the UKE arrangement — are incensed by the coup. ✅ Confirmed historical detail: the Republics of Waon are sworn enemies of the Empire; the Empire only won WW2 against them by dropping 3 atomic bombs.

Both the League and the Republics begin debating whether to ask Jon Medaris (founder of the Desert Empire, who recently captured the Shapas Desert from the Empire) to either (1) retake the UKE, or (2) secure a newly-discovered oil field in the center of the Dielvan Wac Desert, roughly 1,800 miles south of Kila Vas. Medaris — who had already been privately considering seizing these central oil fields himself — is delighted at the prospect of being formally invited, seeking now only a way to push the League and Republics over the edge so they have no choice but to ask for his aid.

Medaris as "Messiah" Figure

✅ Confirmed regional perception: the Kaolsan League and the Republics of Waon view Medaris as an almost messianic figure, come to vindicate decades of wrongs perpetrated against them by the Empire. The Kaolsan League has already publicly allied with the Desert Empire; the Republics of Waon are leaning that direction but have not yet formally committed.
