Background: The Shapas Desert
✅ Origin confirmed: LMT discovered oil in the Shapas Desert in 1920; by 1921 Peplle, Vladimery, and the Empire had all begun drilling there, and in 1922 LMT invited the Empire to provide security for the oilfields — the direct origin of the Empire's long-standing presence there. See 1900-1987: Nations React, the Shapas Oil Discovery, and the Southern Lands' Fate for the full account.
World War 2 was fought over resources and influence in the Dielvan Wac Desert, mostly between the Empire and the huge Republics of Waon, sited northwest of the Shapas Desert. As a result, most of the Empire's military infrastructure in the Shapas Desert (rich in oil, uranium, gems, gold, bauxite, iron ore, and more, with extensive mining, pipelines, refineries, and support facilities from the Empire, Jonesboro, Peplle, and others) was arrayed along the Shapas's northwest arc. Its southern terminal point was "Spartania" — one of the greatest hoaxes in modern history: not an actual nation, but the Empire's premier desert military training center and headquarters for Shapas Desert operations, home to over 3,000,000 military personnel gathered from over 20 nations, continuously monitoring the southern Republics of Waon just a few hundred miles northwest. The name derives from ancient Greek Sparta, the idealized mascot of the facility.
December 25th, 1976 — Outbreak
World War 3 broke out on Christmas Day, 1976, when the Desert Empire — a very small nation of under 50,000 population tucked in a corner of the desert — attacked several Empire military installations in the Shapas Desert. The outbreak initially curtailed space research across the continent, including for the Empire and Peplle, and led the Empire to dismiss Whyncloss International University's claims of "invisible, alien spacecraft" (Jonesboro's stealth satellites — see below).
1978 — Escalation and the WIU Investigation
Whyncloss, 2,000 miles north of the fighting, was initially unaffected, and students and professors at Whyncloss International University (WIU) began an earnest investigation into the "alien spacecraft." Early in 1978, WIU's Engineering and Space Research Departments successfully launched a maneuverable reconnaissance satellite to hunt down and investigate the mystery — attracting attention from the Empire, Jonesboro, Peplle, the Desert Empire, and Vladimery (whose own space research was being eclipsed by Jonesboro, Peplle, and the Empire).
Jonesboro, the Empire, and Peplle — fully engaged in the war — made official overtures to Whyncloss and WIU. The Empire and Jonesboro decided to reveal the true origins of Jonesboro's people to the Whyncloss government, on condition it remain secret until the year 2000 and never be shared with WIU's academics. Peplle remained unaware of Jonesboro's true origin, still officially accepting that Jonesboro's people were refugees from a distant, unlocated continent — though Peplle suspected something was being withheld.
By mid-1978, the Desert Empire had taken full control of the Shapas Desert, committing "genocide" against the hoax-nation of Spartania — in truth, the destruction of the Empire's desert warfare training facility, used by the Empire, Jonesboro, Vladimery, Peplle, and more than a dozen other nations. The Republics of Waon and Araha, far west across the ocean, entered military alliances with the Desert Empire, providing troops, equipment, and material. Araha's entry brought conflict across the world's oceans against the Empire, briefly involving the Janastian Islands, and drew Palas into the war on the Empire's side.
The Refugee Crisis and the Dielvan Wac
Spartania lost nearly 90% of its force killed in battle. Millions of civilian refugees and remnants of dozens of armies fled westward from the Shapas Desert into the greater Dielvan Wac Desert. Denied entry by the Kaolsan nations occupying the Dielvan Wac, they entered anyway, triggering fighting on two fronts — Kaolsan armies ahead, the pursuing Desert Empire army behind — forcing the refugee mass to turn north-northwest into the deep desert. This incursion drew a handful of Kaolsan nations (desert dwellers of the Dielvan Wac) into the war alongside their "cousins," the Desert Empire.
Near the end of 1978, the first troops and refugees reached the city of Kila Vas, where the Empire had established its Northern Army headquarters in 1976. Upon their arrival, the Empire declared the entire United Kaolsan Emirates a war prize — angering the remaining, previously-neutral Kaolsan nations, several of which then also entered the war for the Desert Empire: Soulsen, Lawvesta, Circle Tee Ranch (an independent sovereign ranch-state), Arkanzaia, and Spartania (the hoax facility, now treated as a combatant in its own right).
Jonas's Origin: The Janastian Warhawks
Far to the east, in the Janastian Islands, Perold Jonas had lost his 1969 reelection to the pacifist "Peace-Progressives," who systematically dismantled Janast's vaunted military. Angered, Jonas established the Janastian Warhawks, a private military company of still-serving Janastian military members, and for the first time called on Jonesboro for aid. Jonas was heir to Jonesboro's first corporation, LMT, which had grown rapidly by exploiting Jonesboro's unique secret history. He sold millions in stock and received billions more in grants from LMT and Jonesboro to build an underground military command.
Combin attacked Janast on Christmas Day, 1973. By mid-1976, Combin had overrun most of Janast, with only a mountain chain remaining free. There, the Warhawks waged a guerrilla campaign against Combin, though 99% were eventually killed over the course of the war. Late in 1976, Combin transferred the bulk of its military to the neighboring island of Fainbrotair. Jonas believed a nuclear strike against the Combinese forces there (2/3 of Combin's army) could win the war. Despite fierce debate, the Warhawks' military commanders approved the strike. 2/3 of Combin's army was destroyed, along with 15% of its air force and 5% of its navy — but 6 million Fainbrotair civilians were killed, nearly the entire civilian population.
Combin and all other nations, including Janast's own remaining political infrastructure, turned against Jonas and the Warhawks. The Empire offered to deliver Jonas and the 323 surviving members of the former 30,000-strong Warhawks to a safe haven; Jonas accepted. Three months later, Jonas, his deputy commander Lt. Gen. Johovus Helvatica, and 322 other Warhawks stepped off a submarine onto the beaches of Kila Vas.
Kila Vas and the Rise of Helvatica
In Kila Vas, Jonas and the 323 surviving Warhawks began training the Empire's "Northern Army" — millions of troops from the Empire and other nations who had fled the Desert Empire's onslaught. Losing badly, the Allies (the Empire, Peplle, and partners) turned to space as a possible counter to the Desert Empire's military advantages; space research funding was refunded, doubled, then doubled again in quick succession.
By 1980, the United Kaolsan Emirates was renamed "Helvatica," after its first military governor — Lt. Gen. Johovus Helvatica, of the Janastian Warhawks. ✅ This confirms the origin of the nation name Helvatica. Millions of refugees and troops were squeezed along 100 miles of coastline, from 20 miles south of Kila Vas to 80 miles north. Space research began in earnest, and Jonesboro quietly shared its technology with the Empire — which in turn required Jonesboro to share its secret origins with Peplle and Vladimery.
1982-1984 — New Technology and Ceasefire
By 1982, the Helvatica Military District had built its first military "battle shuttles" — craft that could launch from the ground, maneuver and fight in space, then land again. The Desert Empire countered with its "Skip-Glide Bomber" force — aircraft that could fly to the fringes of space, skip off the atmosphere, and drop payloads anywhere in the world.
In 1984, following a ceasefire, Helvatica received its independence from the Empire and began building its first space station, "Eagle One," a military operations/reconnaissance/observation platform. Peplle began its own space station; Araha began its space station and launched a "combat shuttle" program; and Jonesboro announced completion of its large, multilevel space station "SkyVault" (actually completed in 1979).
1985-1987 — Renewed War and Final Ceasefire
Less than a year later, the Desert Empire relaunched aggression against Helvatica and the Empire, expanding eastward from Kila Vas and surging through central-continent nations, drawing over 100 nations into the war and sending millions more refugees to Kila Vas. In 1985, the Desert Empire again declared a ceasefire; neither side believed it would be the final one.
The war reached Whyncloss's doorstep and the southern edges of the mountains rimming the Northern United Nations (NUN), which had believed itself safe behind this natural barrier and made few military preparations. Peplle, Vladimery, the Empire, and dozens of other nations poured troops and material into Whyncloss and its neighbors. In late 1986, the Desert Empire broke the ceasefire again, surging north over the mountains into the NUN's southern reaches. A dozen nations were captured, sending millions of refugees fleeing further north into the NUN, and several million south to Kila Vas.
