Janastian Islands (including Janast)
Type: Location — Volcanic Island Archipelago Status: Canon (confirmed via "Original Colonists Part Three") — resolves the long-open "Janast" question
Overview
A volcanic archipelago far to the northwest of Jonesboro's continent, reached in 1939 (Maf local calendar) by Perold Jones, aboard one of three huge seaplanes built in what is now Refagio, after a months-long ocean crossing. All but 5 of the expedition, including Perold, later returned to Refagio. Home to a group of small nations, each occupying one of many small islands separated by as little as a few hundred yards to a mile or two of cold water. Formed by now-dormant volcanoes.
Climate: Extreme winters (snow depths of 30+ feet in a single winter, with individual snowfalls of 9–12 feet); cool, sunny summers.
Society: Described as "robust and advanced."
Janast — the Main Island/Nation
Janast is the nation occupying the main island of the archipelago — ✅ this resolves the long-open question of what/where "Janast" is, previously only known from the fact that Perold Jones changed his name to Perold Jonas "a few months after reaching Janast" — ✅ done specifically to distance himself from his family/LMT and to blend in with the local populace, among whom "Jonas" was a common surname. Its capital city is Jolin, home to the Durin College of War, which Perold Jonas enrolled in after renaming himself.
✅ This also strongly confirms the naming connection between "Janast" and the Janastian Warhawks — the mercenary company's name is almost certainly derived from this nation/archipelago, resolving that long-flagged possible connection.
Perold Jones's Journey Here
Perold Jones led an overland expedition out of Jonesboro in 1932 (✅ corrected from an earlier "1922" figure), traveling along the north bank of "the great river" that intersects the continent — ✅ confirmed to be the same river referenced in Aa Konta's prophecies and the Gherallis tribe's travels. By 1937, with clandestine help from LMT aircraft, he'd reached the continent's opposite shore. Rather than stop, he chose to cross the vast ocean beyond, arriving at the Janastian Islands in 1939. At 6 feet 4 inches tall, Perold Jones felt he had "finally discovered his home" here — his own height sitting near the upper end of the height range the Colonists had claimed for their fictional homeland, and closer to the height range of Maf's giant native population.
