Planetary Governments
Type: Systems — Political Classification & Nation Roster Author: Perry Jones Published: Aug 12, 2023 Source: Medium Status: Canon (published, explicitly marked as a partial sample)
Classification
A Planetary Government is a nation whose territory exists exclusively on a single planet's surface (including underground, sea, air, or undersea facilities). May maintain a minor space presence (satellites, stations) but holds no territory beyond its home planet's boundaries — distinguishing it from star-spanning powers like the Viachon Empire or the Original Colonists' empire.
Over 700 Planetary Governments exist in Maf. This article provides only a partial sample (42 names) recalled from memory; the full list/maps are not yet available.
Special Designations
- "Self" as capital → the nation is a City-State
- "Ranch" → a privately-owned sovereign entity, usually owned by one person or family, operated primarily as a ranch — an unusual and distinctly Maf category of micro-nation

Worldbuilding Significance
- Confirms Jonesboro's formal political status: a City-State-type Planetary Government, not merely a city or region. Updates Jonesboro's classification.
- Desert Empire confirmed as the instigator of World War 3 (1976–1987) against Empire — see Desert Empire
- One remaining unconfirmed cross-reference: Ros ↔ Henry Patterson, "President — Ros" (from the NPC roster)
- Introduces "Ranch" as a distinctive nation-type unique to Maf's flavor — good candidate for future worldbuilding/quest content given how unusual a governance model it is
