Maf: Starfleet Battles — First Viachon War

Type: Short Story / Historical Account Author: Perry Jones Published: Jul 9, 2022 Source: Medium Status: Canon (published) — resolves the long-flagged "1st Viachon War" reference

Summary

Set in Helvatica's early spacefaring era — when Helvatica was the only nation with spaceships — deep space signals are detected and traced by Dr. Roland Hardaway of the Jonesboro Academy of Science (Jonesboro being ~7,000 miles from Helvatica's territory). This marks the fifth confirmed alien contact Helvatica has observed. Helvatica Space Command (explicitly the forerunner to Starfleet) dispatches four battlecruisers to investigate; after a four-month transit, they encounter a 3-ship Viachon Empire patrol under Captain An'Kasal.

Neither side can identify the other. Both close cautiously to point-blank range before the Viachon fire first with a "querosol beam" weapon. A brief, three-minute battle follows: Helvatica's ship <em>Genghis Khan</em> destroys one Viachon vessel, but Helvatica loses two of its own ships (<em>Patriot</em> and Genghis Khan, ~400 crew killed); the two Helvatica survivors (<em>Nagarris</em> and <em>Pride of Space</em>, commanded by Captain Peter Smith) warp away.

The story explicitly closes: "The first Viachon War was over, two more, each many times deadlier than its predecessor, would come." This confirms a three-war structure: this skirmish (1st), the 2nd Viachon War (the Bannigans/Shambala-era conflict already documented), and an unnamed, implied 3rd Viachon War.

Entities Introduced

Worldbuilding Significance

  • Resolves the long-open "1st Viachon War" question flagged since the 2nd Viachon War story was first archived
  • Directly ties to the game's former title ("Maf: Starfleet Battles") — Helvatica Space Command being the explicit forerunner to "Starfleet" suggests Starfleet itself is a later formal successor institution
  • One Helvatica ship is named Genghis Khan — an Old Earth historical figure's name, consistent with the Original Colonists' Earth heritage persisting culturally into Maf's shipbuilding naming conventions
  • Confirms Jonesboro and Helvatica are geographically distinct but cooperating entities at this early point (Helvatica doesn't share intelligence/science readily, but does inform Jonesboro of confirmed discoveries) — consistent with their later shared membership in The MACOFS Treaty

Open Questions

  • Precise date of this event not given — likely early in Helvatica's 1984+ independence era, before Starfleet formally existed. Not yet pinned to a specific year.
  • What happened to Dr. Hardaway, Captain Smith, or Captain An'Kasal afterward? Not stated.
  • When/how did Helvatica Space Command formally become "Starfleet"? Not yet documented.
  • Full context of the eventual 3rd Viachon War (implied but not yet named or located in any processed source material)
