Emerging Superpowers

The war devastated over half the continent of Norihing. Some nations were wiped off the map entirely, replaced by other governmental structures.

Helvatica's founding leadership: Perold Jonas was commander of Helvatica's military, not its President. His deputy, Gen. Johovus Helvatica (for whom the nation was named), became Helvatica's first President when it achieved independence.

Kila Vas's early command structure: Early in the war, Kila Vas became the headquarters of the Empire's Northern Army, initially commanded by Gen. Latimer Hollings (originally from Jonesboro); his command was transferred to Gen. Perold Jonas in 1978. Head of the fleet was Admiral Nielas Korduga (the Empire transferred its naval HQ from Lly to Kila Vas in 1977). Air Force commander for the Northern Air Force was Gen. Ras Kenepa, a dynamic individual compared to General Montgomery of WW2; logistics coordinator was Gen. Ilia Pagonis.

Industrial and military build-up: The Empire was relatively untouched by the war; its industrial production tripled due to war production. Peplle and Vladimery, along the east coast, were also untouched — Vladimery's industrial capacity rose 80%, Peplle's doubled. Helvatica, which had virtually no industrial capacity before the war, experienced a wartime boom rivaling the Empire's production. Along the coast from central Kila Vas to about 60 miles north, and a dozen miles inland, the desert was covered with factories, refineries, warehouses, train yards, and ports.

✅ Confirmed population figures: an estimated 50 million people lived in this coastal industrial belt by 1987 (roughly half civilian refugees, half military personnel); 10 million more people migrated to Kila Vas in 1988 and 1989 as word spread it was one of the few "safe" and untouched areas of the war.

Palas saw a relatively minor rise in industrial production; Thasula saw a 50% increase. The Empire's military became by far the largest (navy of thousands of ships, air force of thousands of aircraft, army of thousands of tanks and millions of troops, space force of over 1,500 craft, with full worldwide power-projection capability). The next rival space force was Helvatica, with over 300 spacecraft — no navy, but an army roughly equal to the Empire's, more tanks, superior amphibious capacity, an air force on par with the Empire's, and sea/ air/land/space special forces unrivaled by any other power (though lacking a navy meant Helvatica couldn't project this power overseas). Peplle and Vladimery doubled their militaries but remained much smaller than the Empire or Helvatica, also unable to project power abroad. The Desert Empire and ally Araha increased industrial production by many multiples with militaries numbered in the millions — but roughly 95% of Desert Empire troops were "borrowed" from other nations, and the Desert Empire's war-making capacity was essentially eliminated by war's end, never having possessed a large navy.

Global Cooperation

There is no single global "United Nations." Instead, there are two regional United Nations bodies:

  • The Eastern United Nations (EUN), coordinating recovery in its region.
  • The Northern United Nations (NUN), whose southern periphery had been invaded during the war; its recovery efforts in the south were stymied by member state Zambetq, which had sided with the Desert Empire.

The true global "UN" equivalent is the World Council, whose headquarters moved from Xapata (capital of the Empire) to Kila Vas in 1989. The World Council coordinated humanitarian assistance, housing, rebuilding, and economic recovery for all war-affected nations.

Vladimery is somewhat isolationist and returned to this policy after the war, expelling most of the refugees it had initially housed and encouraging them toward Peplle, Jonesboro, or Kila Vas — most chose Jonesboro or Kila Vas.

Lunar Claims

Due to its new superpower status, the Empire claimed the 5th moon, Magruder (on which it had already landed 10 years before the war) and the 7th moon, Shale Rock, as its own after the war. It established a research facility on the 6th moon, Varsalla.

Political Reorganization: The Kaolsan States

The Kaolsan states, located throughout the continent's desert regions, sought neutrality, but the war overran them regardless. Most organized Kaolsan states sided with the Desert Empire due to shared desert heritage — even though the Desert Empire was itself founded by people from Jonesboro (Jon Medaris, Andrew Johnson, Zarkof Androve, Harold Bronson, and others). Part of the reason: the Empire, Peplle, and Jonesboro (and to a lesser extent Vladimery) had simply "laid claim" to the Shapas Desert once oil was found there, and the Desert Empire was perceived as "liberating" it from these "Eastern powers."

Araha remained antagonistic to the Empire, Helvatica, and their allies, rebuilding its economy and military (80% of its original navy now lay at the bottom of the sea, with much of the rest scattered across Norihing's deserts as rusting wreckage). Zambetq, the NUN's "problem child," doubled down on its disruptive nature. The Desert Empire, forced into war reparations, chose a neutral path — it disbanded most of its remaining military and converted its huge underground war factories into schools, housing, a war museum, colleges, and hospitals, with only 10% remaining as factories.

The Kaolsan states as a whole settled into "neutral ambivalence" toward both the Desert Empire and the Allies (Empire, Helvatica, Whyncloss, Palas, Peplle, Jonesboro, etc.). Two new Kaolsan states that hadn't existed before the war — King Rudyland and PejSha — became close allies of Helvatica, the Empire, and Peplle. Most other nations retained their pre-war alignments; the Republics of Waon became a state within the Desert Empire.

King Rudy and PejSha

PejSha is named after the younger brother, PejSha, of a Kaolsani royal family. His older brother, King Rudy, had been king of their tribe (not yet a nation) for two years before WW3's outbreak. King Rudy is quiet, reserved, commanding, and intelligent, with a keen tactical and strategic mind. His younger, more personable and charismatic brother PejSha led the eastern Kaolsani tribes alongside him. They alone among the Kaolsani recognized the damage the Desert Empire could do to the desert and their heritage, and chose to fight against it. PejSha, while a capable military leader in his own right, focused primarily on weapons procurement, training, and logistics; King Rudy planned training and led the bulk of combat operations, though PejSha also served as a field commander.

Of all the forces arrayed against the Desert Empire, King Rudy and PejSha's forces alone were victorious — until the Desert Empire reached Kila Vas, where it was brought to a standstill by other forces. The Desert Empire was never able to make progress against King Rudy or PejSha directly, and its military bypassed them entirely to strike north toward Kila Vas. Behind their forces lay the Republics of Waon — which never attacked King Rudy or PejSha from the rear, though had they done so, a very different war might have resulted.
