Medaris's Second Broadcast (February 5, 3 PM)
"Our forces are ready. The Empire is doomed. All who seek to support the Empire — and the East — will be met with a wall of fire. Our allies are everywhere. Soon they will appear where you think they are not... The day of reckoning is dawning, don't be caught when the sun strikes."
The Emergency Radio Conference
At 5 PM, an emergency multi-nation conference convenes: the Imperial Cabinet in Xapata, the President and military staff, Orlik's staff in Spartania, Peplle's leadership in Yalk, and Jonesboro/LMT Corporation representatives. Key concerns: Medaris's cryptic warning, the ominous 191-ship Araha fleet approaching Port Wrosjcec, lost contact with recon/intelligence units across the central region, and reports that natural caverns 80 miles east of Maiha are being expanded — possibly for war production. Admiral Hayt (Naval Intelligence) warns the Araha fleet could indefinitely reinforce the Kaolsan nations and Desert Empire if it lands. The group agrees to stall the fleet's unloading under pretext of inspections while Orlik prepares Spartania's defense on all fronts.
The Araha Envoy
A helicopter from the Araha fleet meets Imperial representatives at fleet base Lta, claiming long-standing but never-acted-upon contact with the Kaolsan League, and that the fleet carries only non-lethal aid (food, building supplies, trucks, and deep-desert cargo vehicles) to help "poor Kaolsan citizens." Imperial leadership treats this claim with deep skepticism given its convenient timing.
Intercepted Communications
Imperial Intelligence temporarily cracks Desert Empire encryption, intercepting a 1 AM exchange: Androve ("I'm in position"), Johnson ("standing by, the men are eager"), Bronson ("still 55 miles out, I will hit as soon as I can"), and Androve's reply: "No delays, general. I plan this operation to take 3 days." This intelligence lets Orlik and Navalli plan a preemptive strike — Colonel J.D. Patrick (Special Forces Detachment 100) sent to reconnoiter Androve's true strength; Lt. Colonel Samuel Walters (1st Armored Cavalry) sent against Bronson.
February 5: The Counteroffensive
Artillery opens fire at 2:14 AM. Over the day: Androve's advance is shattered when the 10,000-strong Tranchon force strikes his rear unexpectedly, forcing a full retreat and entrenchment. In the west, Imperial ground-attack aircraft strafe Bronson's forces, though his anti-air defenses inflict heavy losses on the attacking planes. By day's end, the Empire has — temporarily — turned the tide on both fronts.
Johnson's Flanking Maneuvers
Johnson splits his massive force: a 30,000-strong heavy armored cavalry unit moves northwest to reinforce Androve; a heavily reinforced mechanized division (APCs, IFVs, self-propelled guns) moves southwest to outflank Spartania. Newly-arrived General Wils Ta-Silv (Desert Empire Air Force CO) establishes headquarters at the old Sentois airfield. A 160-mile-long Morpasya supply convoy approaches along the northern highway; unidentified armed Kaolsan forces in light vehicles are spotted 120 miles southwest, moving further away rather than toward Spartania.
The Convoy Massacre and the Kaolsan Encounter
Navalli diverts 6 attack helicopters to ambush the Morpasya convoy under cover of darkness — the result is devastating: chain-reaction explosions, catastrophic casualties, the convoy's entire logistics capacity destroyed by dawn. Meanwhile, Imperial Special Forces intercept the Kaolsan observers diplomatically rather than engaging — the Kaolsan officer claims they are merely observing and reporting for the Kaolsan League, heading further west, away from the battle. Their true purpose remains ambiguous and unresolved.
February 6, 1 PM: "Go!"
Androve utters a single unencrypted word over open radio — "Go!" — triggering an overwhelming, coordinated assault:
- Hundreds to thousands of attack helicopters darken the eastern skies over Spartania.
- Dozens to hundreds of bombers unleash devastating payloads.
- Hundreds of Desert Empire fighters destroy nearly all of Spartania's aircraft, in the air and on the ground.
- Simultaneously, mysterious craft descend from low orbit, bombing the Empire's fleet headquarters at Lta, the dockyards at LLy, and Central Military Command itself at Xapata — then roar back into orbit under their own rocket engines.
- Communications with Spartania are lost entirely.
The Skip-Glide Bomber Revealed
✅ The technological secret behind the orbital strikes: General Roebfal Thi'BotLin, CO of the Desert Empire's Skip-Glide Bomber Command. The design originated in the Empire itself (a 1952 high-altitude bomber concept refined by 1954), rejected repeatedly by the Empire and multiple corporations across the following decade as unworkable. Thi'BotLin — a Maiha Engineering Institute professor — discovered an old notebook of design documents at a Kila Vas souvenir shop in 1969 and spent years developing it, aided by his friend Andrew Johnson (Medaris's aide, then a University of Maiha history/English professor), who recognized its strategic potential as Medaris rose to power.
The design: a heavy bomber configured for no-atmosphere/low-gravity operation, lifted to space by two detachable, reusable rockets, then "skipping" off the upper atmosphere with minimal fuel to circumnavigate the planet in hours. Small rockets return it to orbit after each bombing run; standard jet/ramjet engines power atmospheric flight. First successful flight: late 1975. By February 1976, 7 operational Skip-Glide Bombers exist. An offshoot design — the glideable cruise missile, 1,000-mile range — is what struck the Empire's Army Command Headquarters in San.
The Aftermath in Spartania
Major Kingston (Spartania Procurement Command) finds the command center reduced to rubble extending for blocks, helps organize medics amid the wounded and dead. By 12:30 AM, he assembles ~30 military and civilian survivors with salvaged trucks and 4 APCs, evading Bronson's patrols, beginning a 4-day journey west to the Great River.
Imperial Command in Crisis
Central Military Command in Xapata survives with significant but recoverable damage; communications with Spartania remain severed, and the worst is feared. Naval Command, lightly damaged, temporarily assumes control of all Imperial military operations; General Pataug Harta (North Army CO — distinct from the "Northern Army" based in Kila Vas) arrives to coordinate. Army Command HQ in the southern city of San is also struck by 2 cruise missiles fired from an unlocated offshore platform.
Political Collapse
As a direct result of Spartania's fall and the loss of the Shapas: the President of the Empire resigns on February 10; the Emperor resigns on February 19. Androve's forces complete the encirclement of Soulsen, cutting off oil, gas, steel, and other resources from both the Empire and the EUN entirely.
Final Casualty Figures
- Over 700,000 Imperial and allied troops killed, including General Orlik and Lt. Gen. Navalli themselves.
- 500,000 wounded, transported by Androve's own logistics to hospitals in Empire-friendly countries.
- 150,000 taken prisoner.
- 50,000 escaped, eventually joining Major Kingston's group at the Great River.
The Kaolsan Alignment and Propaganda War
Following the Desert Empire's decisive victory, the Kaolsan nations formally side with the Desert Empire — leaving Major Kingston, now the highest-surviving-ranking officer of the former Spartanian command structure, stranded deep in what is now enemy territory. The Empire launches a propaganda campaign accusing the Desert Empire of "genocide" against a "neutral, small country" — entirely false, but the narrative sticks and becomes widely believed.
Victory Celebration (February 24)
Medaris flies to Spartania to survey the aftermath — pleased despite the lingering odor of decaying flesh. He then travels to the new Sentois Air Force headquarters to meet with Bronson, General Andrew Johnson (the field commander), General Wils-Ta-Silv, General Roebfal Thi'BotLin, General Zarkof Androve, and others, distributing medals for the "brilliant" operation. Afterward, the assembled senior leadership — including Medaris and his aide Johnson — convenes to discuss: "What's next?"
