Admiral Tilling's Arrival
An hour before Sentois's battle begins, First Lord-Admiral Tilling of Central Military Command arrives by air, circling Spartania. What he sees — forces deployed east, west, and south instead of north against the (fictional) Republic threat — confuses him, then angers him, then leaves him livid: Orlik appears to be openly disobeying the Emperor's direct orders. Tilling storms into Spartania's command center: "General Orlik, what in the hell is going on here?"
Orlik holds firm, citing his own reconnaissance confirming the Republics are conducting a feint while the real threat builds in the desert. Tilling, still operating on Central Command's belief that the Desert Empire numbers merely "a few hundred untrained laborers and camel herders," threatens to relieve Orlik of command.
The Radio Confirms the Truth
As the confrontation unfolds, Sentois's military radio crackles to life with the sounds of the actual battle — "Mass attack... artillery, aircraft... withdraw, withdraw..." — explosions, screaming aircraft, dying men. Tilling, hearing the unmistakable sounds of a real, overwhelming assault, is forced to confront the truth: "How could we have gotten it so wrong? ARE we wrong? How?"
Reviewing Orlik's handwritten Special Forces reports, aerial photographs, and recorded radio transmissions from overrun base commanders, Tilling's doubt collapses into certainty. He turns to Orlik: "You were right, and I was wrong. I should have listened to you."
Tilling's Decision
Rather than relieving Orlik, Tilling empowers him — ordering Orlik to strike first, unleashing Spartania's full might against the Desert Empire wherever he judges most effective, while Tilling himself returns to Central Command to report the truth. ✅ Confirmed detail: Spartania is not, as widely believed even within the Empire, a "country" — that's Imperial propaganda everyone has come to believe. It is purely a desert warfare training center, home to 1.7 million dormant, highly trained troops who could have crushed the Desert Empire early — had Central Command not ordered them to stand down.
The Resource Geography of the Shapas
The Shapas is extraordinarily rich, explaining why both sides fight so fiercely for it:
- Arkanzaia (eastern Shapas) — gems, precious stones, gold, silver.
- Trouve (just north of Arkanzaia) — coal, uranium, iron ore, bauxite, and other minerals/ores.
- Lawvesta (northwest) — rare earths, uranium, talcum, granite, marble, limestone.
- The oil fields — spanning roughly 300×500 miles between these regions; an estimated 300-400 billion barrels of oil and 10-12 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
- Soulsen — originally a cattle-ranching state, but oil was discovered simultaneously with its founding; by 1976 its southern third (50 miles wide, 12 miles average depth from the border) is packed with refineries, ore processing plants, smelters, freight yards. Oil/gas/minerals move by rail/pipeline 350 miles north to the Great River for cargo shipment.
- Overall economic weight: the Shapas supplies ~20% of the Empire's oil/gas, ~35% of the EUN's, and ~30% of the NUN's — with some individual nations 100% dependent on Shapas resources. Ownership of the Shapas's oil companies and industrial facilities is split roughly 50/50 between Empire and EUN corporations.
The Multi-Front War Widens
While Bronson and Bozeman close on Spartania from the south (within 25 miles at the height of the siege), a second front opens: General Andrew Johnson's force (the genuine Desert Empire aide, distinct from the mistaken-identity general) swells to a staggering ~800,000 troops, grinding to a halt just short of Spartania after relentless fighting. To the north, General Zarkof Androve (a Russian, notably from Jonesboro) leads ~80,000 troops in rapidly capturing Arkanzaia and Trouve, deliberately preserving the pipelines and drilling infrastructure intact — planning to seize and use Soulsen's oil/gas capacity for the Desert Empire's own war effort.
Medaris's Origin Secret: "Et Spa-El"
✅ Confirmed detail: Medaris's origin in Jonesboro — "home and root" of the Eastern Establishment — remains a closely guarded secret. He publicly claims to be a genuine child of the desert, a claim the Kaolsani readily accept via their cultural concept of "Et Spa-El" ("The Spell of the Desert") — anyone transformed by a profound desert experience is welcomed as a native Kaolsani thereafter, whatever their origin. Medaris walked off his job as a 22-year-old oil field worker a decade ago, vanished into the desert, and resurfaced in Maiha a year or two later, utterly transformed — though he has never confirmed or denied being what everyone can plainly see: a white man of Eastern origin.
The Kaolsan League and the Republics' Diplomacy
As battles rage, Ambassador Zora Al-Zorn (Kaolsan League) and Ambassador Kapitser Moksi (Republics of Waon) request an audience with the Empire's President. The Kaolsan increasingly view Medaris and his "Desert Legions" — a term carrying deep mystical weight, referring to legendary invincible fighters of unknown origin who reverse historical wrongs — as their messiah. The Republics (culturally half-Kaolsan, half-Waonian) share this view, still smarting from their WW2 defeat (ended by 3 atomic bombs) and the humiliating loss of their fleet and Kila Vas itself, seized by the Empire in 1944. Moksi delivers a veiled warning: continued Imperial action against the Desert Empire could be construed as an act of war against the Republics themselves.
The Financial Mystery
Imperial financial forensic analysts cannot trace the Desert Empire's funding — billions of dollars in equipment already deployed, more arriving daily. Two leading theories: (1) a covert coalition of sympathetic nations donating funds/materiel, or (2) a covert banking consortium — with Kila Vas flagged as the most plausible source given its financial secrecy laws and wealth-management infrastructure (Peplle, Jonesboro, and the Empire itself are considered unlikely sources).
Navalli's Withdrawal and "Red One"
Under relentless pressure from Johnson's 800,000-strong force, and worried about Androve's absent northern army potentially appearing behind him, Navalli requests and receives authorization for a coordinated fighting withdrawal to pre-prepared defenses — nicknamed "Red One" by the troops (after the red flags marking the area) — just outside Spartania. Two days into the withdrawal, Lawvesta (220 miles northeast of Spartania) surrenders to an unidentified force, believed to be Androve.
The Late-February Buildup
By the last week of February, Spartania is receiving cargo transports every 10-12 minutes — food, water, medicine, troops, tanks, artillery, helicopters, missiles. Tranchon (westernmost EUN nation) deploys air defense units and 10,000 troops, though Lawvesta's fall forces them to find alternate routes through difficult terrain. The wider EUN (Eastern United Nations) is bitterly divided — pro-intervention factions warn that losing the Shapas (source of up to 80% of some nations' critical resources) would be catastrophic; cautious factions fear provoking a genuine world war, especially given the Kaolsan nations' likely interpretation of any EUN mobilization as an attack on themselves.
The Araha Fleet
On February 4, Imperial Naval Intelligence detects a fleet of 191 cargo ships originating from Araha — a nation with no previously known ties or contact with anyone on Norihing — inbound to the Port of Wrosjcec, the largest port on the western seaboard (capable of serving 300+ ships simultaneously, serving nearly all Kaolsan nations, the southern Republics, and the Empire's own northern territories). The 20,000-mile ocean crossing would have taken weeks, meaning the voyage was planned long before the current crisis. That same night, contact is lost with recon units 75 and 80 miles from Spartania — an ominous, unexplained silence as the climax of the battle approaches.
