The Viachon Creation Myth and the Formalization of Trial (Full Text)
Type: Narrative — In-Universe Mythology (Full Text) Status: Canon (confirmed by creator) — full text preserved per archival standard, fictional in-universe religious content
This documents the Viachon Empire's foundational cosmology — the Elder-Recited Origin myth, and how it hardened from cosmology into lived law during the pre-space "Age of Clans and Trial." See The Viachon Ancestor Rivalries and Three Religious Currents for the direct continuation, and The Viachon Origin: Vael Turoq, Exile, and Nepheria for the civilizational/migratory history (homeworld, exile, journey to Nepheria) that runs alongside this cosmological account.
The First Telling (Elder-Recited Origin)
Not presented as objective truth — this is the account spoken before great trials, declarations of war, and the induction of judges.
Before there was ground to stand upon, there was Pressure. Before there was breath, there was Demand. Existence began not with light or darkness, but with an unanswerable question: "What endures?" From that question came Strain, and from Strain, Form — torn into being by resistance, not born gently. The universe had once been soft, unshaped, endless in possibility and empty of consequence. Nothing held. So it folded upon itself and hardened. Where it hardened: Weight. Where there was weight: Conflict. Where there was conflict: Selection. That which endured selection became Real.
The First Division
Not between light and dark, or life and death — between that which resists and that which yields. Yielding isn't condemned; it simply isn't remembered. From the longest-surviving forms arose Beings, not yet named, capable of recognizing resistance in others. They learned the First Law without being taught it: "Endurance confers legitimacy."
The Birth of Judgment
Conflict without measure is waste. Those who endured longest learned to witness struggle rather than merely participate. This is when Judgment entered the universe — not mercy, not cruelty, but clarity: observing conflict and declaring which force proved itself sufficient. From Judgment came Order, not peace. Peace is a pause; Order is a structure that survives violence.
The Naming of the Viachon
The name Viachon means neither "people," "warriors," nor "chosen." In the Old Tongue, now lost except in fragments, it meant "Those who did not recede." The Viachon were not created as a species — they were revealed as a consequence. When others withdrew, adapted, or fragmented under pressure, the Viachon pressed inward. They became what remained.
The Covenant of Struggle
The Viachon made no pact with gods — they made a pact with Reality itself, spoken only at the highest trials: Struggle is sacred, because it reveals truth. Victory is not virtue, but it is evidence. Survival is not moral, but it is decisive. Authority is never granted, only demonstrated.
The Warning
"The universe does not punish weakness. It forgets it." Even the Viachon will one day be tested; if they fail, they will deserve to end. Spoken not as fear, but acceptance.
Closing Rite
All present speak in unison: "Let us be worthy of what remains."
The Age of Clans and Trial: Myth Becomes Law
Approx. 15,500-11,500 years before First Contact, pre-space, pre-industrial (early metallurgy at most). The First Telling was unfinished — a framework describing why endurance mattered, but not how it would be proven, or by whom. This age is when the myth descended into practice.
Early Via Chon were scattered clusters, each interpreting the First Telling through necessity. All knew the phrases (endurance confers legitimacy, struggle reveals truth, authority must be demonstrated) but disagreed wildly on their meaning. The myth didn't resolve this — it let clans test one another.
Three refinements emerged through outcome, never doctrine:
- Endurance is not survival alone — it's sustained function under pressure (clans that merely hid eventually collapsed).
- Victory without recognition is incomplete — authority must be recognized by others to stabilize.
- Strength without judgment becomes waste — purely destructive clans burned out, unable to discern which conflicts mattered.
The name Via Chon first appears here — not a noun, but a descriptor: "Those who pass through." To pass through trial, conflict, loss, without shedding function. Later closing phrase: "Truth is what survives us."
The Formalization of Trial (V-14,000 to V-11,500)
Dated in Viachon reckoning, pre-space/pre-industrial era.
- V-14,000 — Trial of Claim: any clan asserting dominion, authority, resource rights, or doctrinal primacy had to declare a Claim before Witnessed Elders — stating what was contested, what outcome proved legitimacy, and what would be yielded on failure. A Claim without defined consequence was void.
- V-13,500 — The Hard Places: as Trials destroyed fertile land, Trial was confined to places dangerous to everyone — volcanic fields, salt flats, frozen highlands, flood-prone river mouths — legitimate only if neither clan controlled it and no settlement could follow.
- V-13,000 — The Rite of Contest: Trials were constrained by participant count, permitted tools, duration, and victory conditions — not for mercy, but clarity. Victory under constraint proved adaptability, not brute force; unconstrained destruction became evidence of conceptual weakness.
- V-12,700 — The Emergence of Witness: individuals whose sole function was remembering truth — memorizing Claims, conditions, and outcomes, traveling between clans, correcting false retellings. The ancestor role to the later Ren'Khal. Falsifying a Witnessed outcome meant total loss of standing.
- V-12,200 — The Binding of Outcome: Trial outcomes became final; refusal to accept invited unified reprisal; repeated defiance marked a clan for erasure. This made Via Chon warfare self-limiting.
- V-11,500 — Transition into the Age of Order (proto-state era).
Elder teaching: "Trial taught strength when to stop." When the Viachon eventually reach space, they don't invent new doctrine — they translate old truths into larger arenas: asteroids become Hard Places, vacuum becomes neutral ground, orbital Trial is simply Trial unbound by soil.
