The Viachon Ancestor Rivalries and Three Religious Currents (Full Text)

Direct continuation of The Viachon Creation Myth and the Formalization of Trial. This documents the Age of Founders and Ancestors, the eight named ancestor rivalries, and the three religious currents (Thra'Keth) they crystallize into.

The Age of Founders and Ancestors (Approx. 15,500-12,500 BFC)

Also called "The Time When Names First Endured" — overlapping the final centuries of The Hunt, the early Clan Wars, and the first chaotic pre-codification Trials. Heroes arise not in stability but when survival is uncertain and memory fragile.

Two Kinds of Founders

  • The Blooded Founders — rose through The Hunt, mastered terrain and killing, defended clans during collapse and famine. Their strength was visible.
  • The Bound Founders — aided by ancestors, guided by voices, dreams, or signs, present where probability should have failed. They never claimed divine favor — only "I was not alone." The Viachon call these the Touched, not gods.

The Ancestors' Role

Ancestors do not command — they lean: sharpening instinct, altering timing, narrowing paths, warning without speech. Direct intervention is considered dishonorable — if ancestors fight for the living, the living have failed.

Becoming an Ancestor

To ascend: a death must resolve something larger than the self, be remembered without embellishment, and the individual must never have broken a Binding. Ancestors are not immortal beings — they are patterns that persist.

The First Heroic Collapse

"The first hero died because he believed strength was enough." An unnamed figure ended three wars, then refused Trial. His death taught that even founders must yield to structure — directly preceding the Binding of Outcome. Elder saying: "The ancestors gave us fire. Trial taught us where to place it."

The Rival Ancestors (Sha'eth-Korr — "Enduring Tensions")

Approx. 14,200-11,800 BFC. The Viachon believe ancestors don't evolve — each is preserved at the moment their pattern stabilized, so when their values conflict, they don't argue. They pull. A Via Chon may feel two correct paths simultaneously — not a curse, but "a sign of gravity."

The First Recorded Rivalry

Korrath of the Red Ground (Blooded Founder, defender of collapsing clans, advocated overwhelming force) vs. Sha'len of the Quiet Path (Bound Founder, ended wars through withdrawal/redirection, believed survival came from denying enemies meaning). They died the same season; their followers did not. Korrath's descendants pressed for conquest, Sha'len's refused expansion — both claimed ancestor favor, both correct. The resulting war lasted 7 generations, killing more Via Chon than any external enemy to that point, forcing the first proto-Trials into existence. Trial's hidden purpose: not to judge the living, but to silence the dead — anonymizing outcome so no ancestor could dominate.

The Eight Named Rival Ancestor Pairings

  1. Korrath the Red-Handed vs. Sha'len of the Quiet Path — Domain: War Initiation. "End the threat before it chooses you" vs. "Let the threat exhaust itself upon your absence."
  2. Vethra the Bound vs. Raal-Kesh the Unbroken — Domain: Obedience/Command. "Power is restraint made visible" vs. "Command exists to be obeyed, not interpreted."
  3. Threnn the Hunter of Long Shadows vs. Urrakai the Storm-Born — Domain: Method of Combat. "The unseen strike decides the war" vs. "Fear is forged in open thunder."
  4. Esh-Kora the Shield-Mother vs. Khal-Tor the Breaker — Domain: Protection vs. Sacrifice. "No victory is worth the loss of the young" vs. "Survival demands payment."
  5. Naelith the Rememberer vs. Vor-Than the Severer — Domain: Memory/Continuity. "What is remembered binds us" vs. "Memory is weight; cut it free."
  6. Hara-Vesh the Listener vs. Tarkuun the Decider — Domain: Judgment/Authority. "All voices contain danger and truth" vs. "Indecision kills more than error."
  7. Oshen the Veiled vs. Graath the Revealed — Domain: Secrecy/Truth. "What is hidden survives" vs. "What is known cannot be twisted."
  8. Kaith-Run the Endurer vs. Vel-Torin the Swift Flame — Domain: Time/Momentum. "Time defeats what force cannot" vs. "Delay is decay."

Cultural rule: no Trial may invoke only one ancestor from a rival pair — doing so invalidates it. Added after the War of Remembered Blood, when clans tried to weaponize ancestral favor. Elder closure phrase: "The ancestors do not agree — so that we may endure."

The Three Viachon Religious Currents (Thra'Keth — "Ways of Enduring")

✅ Confirmed: these emerge after the Age of Clans, during Trial's formalization, when myth is forced into structure. They do not contradict — they exist in productive tension.

1. The Way of the Blade (Thra'Keth Varn) — Current of Action

Draws from Korrath, Raal-Kesh, Urrakai, Tarkuun, Vel-Torin. Core belief: survival is decided by decisive action. Strength must be visible; delay is danger; authority exists to be exercised. Rites: Trial by combat, public oaths, ritual scars, weapons consecration. Failure mode: recklessness, arrogance, internal fracture.

2. The Way of the Shadow (Thra'Keth Shai) — Current of Patience

Draws from Sha'len, Threnn, Oshen, Kaith-Run, Hara-Vesh. Core belief: survival is decided by position and restraint. Victory precedes conflict; knowledge is power; endurance outlasts force. Rites: silent Trials, memory fasting, veiled rites, long-horizon planning rituals. Failure mode: paralysis, over-calculation, moral detachment.

3. The Way of the Hearth (Thra'Keth Esh) — Current of Continuity

Draws from Esh-Kora, Naelith, Vethra (and mediating aspects of Sha'len and Hara-Vesh). Core belief: survival is decided by what is preserved. The future must recognize the past; strength without continuity is extinction; honor binds generations. Rites: ancestor shrines, clan rites, child-naming ceremonies, remembrance cycles. Failure mode: stagnation, fear of change, ossification.

The Triune Balance Doctrine

No Viachon follows only one current — a warrior may lean toward one, but a Trial invoking only a single Way is spiritually invalid. This belief predates Viachon spaceflight:

"The Blade wins the moment. The Shadow wins the war. The Hearth wins the future."

This doctrine prevents religious wars, enforces ideological humility, explains Viachon internal debate, and makes their culture resilient — Viachon react slowly but decisively; their warriors are disciplined, not fanatical; their diplomacy feels alien but coherent.
