History and Culture (Full Text)

Source: conversations-002.json, "Maf Game Overview" — see RAW SOURCE. About 300 years ago, the Temczech Marshals rode into the desert from the arid hill country where King Rudy's domain sits today. Bypassing Nik (culturally comparable to ancient Egypt), they settled just west of Nik on the Great River's north bank. Roughly 220 years ago they began imposing taxes and tariffs on all river traffic crossing east or west along the Great River — and succeeded for nearly 60 years, before the Nikians and several Military and Merchant Orders, finally fed up, invaded them about 160 years ago. A decade of war followed; overwhelmed by superior numbers, the Marshals agreed to suspend — never "terminate," only "suspend" — their river tolls.

That war split the Marshals in two: a smaller group crossed to the river's south bank and became the "South Temczech Marshals," now considerably more docile (though still not warm toward outsiders or other Kaolsani); the north-bank Marshals, who consider "Temczech Marshals" simply their nation's own name, remain aggressive, militant, and hostile to this day. Relatively small in number, they are ethnically and by DNA part of an eastern Kaolsani line, and belong to no "Order" — identity runs "Marshal" first, then Temczech, then Kaolsani.

Dress and Rank

Formal wear is typically a tan or brown button shirt with brown or black pants, always featuring a shoulder epaulet that may (rarely) hold a gold, red, or blue rope device signifying some form of outstanding service — meaning varies by group, but it commands respect among Marshals universally. Traditional Kaolsani robes are distinguishable from other Kaolsani by their piping: red for religious, political, or academic standing; brown for most other professions; black for the military. Sashes, reserved for ceremonial, diplomatic, or trade occasions, mark either a high leader or a highly noted community member — both require authority over others to wear one — and are attached via a left-shoulder epaulet, left unhemmed so they flutter freely. Robes themselves are always brilliant white with red, brown, green, or black piping. Ties are never worn by Marshals or any Kaolsani, in any circumstance — Kaolsani culture never adopted the tie, and seeing outsiders wear them led to the tie being read as a mark of servitude.

Every Marshal — male or female, young or old — is addressed simply as "Marshal." Children are "Aspirants" until an elaborate "Turn of Rank" ceremony, attended by family, distant cousins, local leaders, and much of the community, admits them at age 12 (boys) or 13 (girls).
