Design Philosophy: Armor Over Shields

The Viachon are a warrior race steeped in tradition and honor, distinct from both MACOFS's engineering pragmatism and the Warhawks' refined sophistication. They rely almost entirely on armor rather than shielding, which MACOFS regards as almost laughable — armor adds enormous mass, reducing maneuverability to "that of a slug." Viachon ships fly well in a straight line but lack maneuverability as a field entirely; they add as much weaponry as can be physically "bolted" onto a hull. Shielding is seen as nearly cowardly and kept at the bare minimum needed to withstand space debris, micrometeorites, and larger objects — concentrated weapons fire penetrates a Viachon shield in short order by design.

"A shield is a promise. Armor is a vow. Promises may fail. Vows must be kept with mass. The Viachon do not hide behind light. They meet force with substance."
"Maneuverability is the art of avoidance. Avoidance is useful for merchants. Warships are not merchants... Turning is a courtesy. Straight lines are truth."

Wave-Amplified Armor: Technical Specification

Viachon armor is "wave amplified": it absorbs incoming energy and spreads it across nearby armor sections, temporarily increasing those sections' damage tolerance until the enemy fire stops and the effect dissipates. There is a hard limit on how much fire can be diluted this way — sustained fire from large energy weapons will eventually cut through. Standard armor sections are 1 square meter, 30 centimeters thick, weigh roughly 1 ton each, and withstand approximately 400,000 joules per second individually — spread-loaded across neighboring sections during sustained fire, the effective tolerance rises to a maximum of 800,000 joules per second, but any further increase or fire sustained over 1 second begins damaging the block regardless. A lighter alloy variant is used for armed civilian vessels (couriers, scouts, police, patrol craft); ordinary unarmed civilian ships carry no armor at all, relying solely on minimal shielding.

Ship Interiors: The Maze and the Open Heart

Crew comfort is not a priority. Interiors are cramped, dark, and packed with piping, spare stores, arms lockers, medkits, and spare energy rifles (in case of boarding). Because boarding is a real possibility, corridors form a deliberate maze — new crew often need weeks to learn a ship's layout. The sole exception is the engineering decks housing the ship's Roq Ashana (V-Drive) blocks: "Viachon ships are mazes everywhere except where the ship's soul resides." Every large Viachon ship also has weapons firing ranges ("Longrooms") and at least one generic chapel serving the crew's three primary religions; capital ships may carry three separate chapels, one per religion.

The Chapel

Viachon chapels are intentionally small, private spaces of warrior discipline — never public halls, never clergy-run, never ceremonial spectacle. Short wood benches face a curtained wall concealing a wooden shrine. Curtains are heavy, thick cloth; a gold curtain specifically signifies that an ancestor has appeared or manifested there — gold is cloth, not metal, and its use is restrained and culturally weighty, never casual. One incident account, "The Gold Curtain of the Unbroken Oath," is preserved as the kind of story "whispered, archived, and never embellished" among the Viachon — no gods, no spectacle, only an ancestor, which among them is considered more than enough.

Roq Ashana: "The God Who Carries the World Forward"

Roq Ashana is the Viachon name for the V-Drive material/technology (see also the V-Drive (Viachon Drive) page), understood simultaneously as myth remembered by warriors and as engineering truth understood by shipwrights — "translated from Forge-Clan oral" tradition. Viachon ships arrange their Roq Ashana blocks in long rows on the engineering decks, with open floor space often extending from side to side; gantry cranes mounted near the ceiling remove damaged block sections and install replacement cubes.

The Vigil of Roq Ashana (Power-Down Doctrine)

Viachon doctrine absolutely requires that no fewer than one cube remain active at all times when the block array is otherwise powered down — a rule blending ceremonial meaning with hard engineering rationale, in the manner a warrior culture justifies a sacred law from hard-earned pragmatism ("learned through loss, corrected through discipline, then ritualized into standard practice").

Redundancy Doctrine

The Viachon maintain little to no redundancy in their V-Drive arrays: "if it isn't in service, the block is wasted." As weapons and armor increase, ships grow larger simply to accommodate a greater number of blocks, rather than building in spare capacity.

The Awakening Ritual (First-Person Account)

A first-person account from a raw recruit's first attendance at the ignition/"awakening" of a full Roq Ashana block array:

"I had been told not to stare. That was the first instruction the deck chief gave us as we entered engineering — do not stare, do not speak, do not move unless ordered. I tried to obey. I failed almost immediately. The space was vast. Bigger than any hall I had ever stood in, bigger than the Longrooms back home, bigger even than the Hall of Ancest[ors]..."

As the array powers up, strips along the block housings glow blue — a real physical effect caused by the expanding energy field generated by the blocks themselves, not merely symbolic lighting, deliberately tied to genuine underlying physics rather than decoration alone.

Comparison to MACOFS Ship Design

MACOFS ships carry no armor in the Viachon sense — their hulls are made of a very strong alloy, and MACOFS relies solely on shielding for protection, the philosophical inverse of Viachon doctrine. This comparison, and a Viachon intelligence rebuttal to it, were both drafted as in-universe documents during this conversation, alongside a destroyer design (a pre-Kila Vas-era Viachon heavy cruiser) from an innovative Viachon design/construction consortium.

Open Questions

  • The full mathematical formula devised for calculating required Roq Ashana block counts from a ship's weapons/armor loadout was discussed but not captured in reproducible form on this pass.
  • The specific destroyer design and its full MACOFS-comparison intelligence brief were generated in this conversation but not extracted verbatim here — worth a future pass if ship-statistics detail is wanted.
