Standing (Reputation System)
Type: Systems — Core Game Mechanic Status: Canon (published, player-facing guide) Source: Introduced in Borrowing Money from the Bank
Overview
Standing represents a player character's relationship with any given entity in the game — NPCs, corporations, other players, banks, etc. It's a cross-cutting reputation mechanic, not specific to banking (banking is just the first documented use case).
Mechanics
- Starting value: All characters begin at Standing 0.0 (Neutral) with any given entity
- Scale: Positive Standing is favorable, negative is unfavorable
- Positive gains: +0.01 to +0.1 per action
- Negative range: -0.01 down to -10.0 or lower (unfavorable)
- How it increases: Completing Missions, Assignments, or Contracts on behalf of an entity (Corporations, Players, or NPCs)
- Standing is entity-specific — you have a separate Standing score with each entity you interact with (e.g., your Standing with the World Bank is distinct from your Standing with any other bank, NPC, or corporation)
Open Questions
- What causes Standing to decrease? Not specified in this article — likely covered in mission/contract-related material
- Full scale bounds beyond -10.0 not specified — is there a floor?
- How Standing interacts with factions specifically (e.g., does helping one faction lower Standing with a rival?) — worth checking once faction material is processed
