Overview
One of the world's premier yacht racing events, held annually in Jonesboro Bay. All boats in all divisions are powered by wind alone. By 2020, the race is divided into 4 classes:
The Four Divisions
- Class A — The Traditionalists (1899–present): the oldest, most prestigious division — 36-meter sloop hull yachts, relying purely on sail trimming, tacking, and classic navigation. Considered the most grueling division, often called the "Heart of the Jonesboro Cup."
- Class B — The Multihull Revolution (1984–present): catamarans and trimarans, lighter, faster, and more stable, favored by modern design innovators.
- Class C — The Hydrofoil Titans (1990–present): hydrofoil sailboats using lifting foils to reduce water resistance, appearing to "fly" over the surface. Widely considered the most exhilarating division to watch.
- Class D — The Future of Sailing (2014–present): airlift/semi- antigravity sailboats that hover just above the water, using aerodynamic principles to remain wind-powered while eliminating nearly all drag. The most technologically advanced class; has sparked debate among sailing purists.
Race Formats
- The Classic Regatta — a long-distance endurance race along the historic Jonesboro coastline
- The Speed Circuit — a closed-course sprint of high-speed laps
- The Tactical Challenge — a navigation-based competition through changing wind and tidal conditions
The Jonesboro Cup Trophy
Awarded to the top-performing team across all divisions — one of the most coveted awards in competitive sailing.
