Colonel Igmund Pay
An Empire officer who served as Perold Jonas's personal assistant throughout the war years, from 1976 (when Jonas judged Helvatica's original command essentially incompetent as a war leader) through 1978. In 1984, with the signing of the Helvatica Constitution, Pay is elevated to Executive Director — the officeholder responsible for approving Helvatica's governing decisions as the Constitution requires — transitioning seamlessly from aide-de-camp to a formal constitutional office, a role he holds into the post-war period as Jonas's trusted right hand. Pay eventually transitions out of Jonas's direct staff as Jonas takes on new commands (including the training program that produces the Drop Suit-equipped assault troops below); Lieutenant Colonel Shanda Tomasa, 42, succeeds him as Jonas's principal staff officer at Northern Military Command in Kila Vas.
The Drop Suit Mk I
A modular powered-armor system Jonas personally oversees the design of (vetoing early proposals for thrusters, air foils, a hard shell, gyros, hydro/magnetic assist, grav dampers, and adaptive stealth/camouflage — none included in the Mk I), developed for the orbital-drop assault troops later deployed against Zambetq in 1991.
Construction: a layered suit (soft wicking inner layer with biometric sensors, stiffer composite-reinforced outer layers) extending to matching glove and boot systems, with the boots' inner layer sharing the suit's material for consistency and the outer layer using a stiff composite core.
Systems Packs: the suit connects to two primary modular components — the Arm Systems Pack and Main Systems Pack (MSP) — both detachable/attachable via a dual-cilia interface (one type for data transfer, one for physical attachment). All Arm Systems Packs share identical dimensions (roughly 4⅛ × 1.70 × ⅜ inches) with a recessed touchscreen, and are built around a "Basic" module with additional role/rank-specific modules layered on for field-swappable configuration. The MSP's Central Processing Unit occupies a dedicated, technician-inaccessible Central Compartment (1.8 × 8.55 × 10.45 inches), accessed only by inverting the MSP and unlocking a cilia pad covering its entire underside.
Accessories: modular "Strap-On" cilia-attached armor plating, available in the same outer-armor material as the suit itself, covering shins, thighs, chest, torso, lower back, groin, upper/lower arms, neck (as a brace), hands (back-of-hand), ankles, and feet — with some pieces overlapping by design for layered protection in high-risk zones.
Training Program
Jonas builds a roughly 10-month training pipeline around the suit, structured week by week: Weeks 1-2 are pure physical training with no classroom component (0330/0400-2000/2100 hours), mandatory 5-6 hour nightly sleep with one 3.5-hour "sleep shock" disruption per cycle at Drill Instructor discretion; Weeks 3-5 introduce classroom training; Week 8 ("Hell Week") combines an intense field exercise with academic assessment; drop suit proficiency training — including full nude/undress protocols for NBC (nuclear/biological/chemical) decontamination scrubdown drills, required of officers and enlisted alike regardless of rank — occupies several additional months, since each suit is form-fitted to its individual wearer. The program culminates in graded field evaluations (assessed jointly by commanding officers) determining which candidates continue to full commissioning.
