Overview

A large, canine-like herbivore resembling a hyena in shape and build, standing 4 to 4.5 feet tall at the shoulder. Found in arid and semi-arid biomes with hills and canyons — the hilly regions of the Republics of Waon, the eastern Dielvan Wac, the western foothills of the Vrobidy Mountains, through Morpasya and Anais, and in Nasobeem — wherever year-round desert flora exists.

Physical Characteristics

  • Teeth: like a cow, adapted for grazing tough desert vegetation
  • Hooves: split, like a goat — the bottom of each hoof is ovoid, with a horny outer rim for durability and a gripping membrane at center for traction on steep, rocky inclines. A fibrous, woven-hair membrane between the hooves protects against sharp stones and hot surfaces.
  • Water storage: stores water internally like a camel, surviving up to 4 days without drinking
  • Tail: a short, prehensile tail (8-10 inches), used to grip shrubs, cactus, or small tree trunks for stability on steep terrain

Diet & Behavior

A strict herbivore — grass, cactus, plants, leaves, and brush, chewing tree bark and consuming entire cacti for both nutrition and hydration. As a ruminant, it chews its cud, and will spit or eject cud at those it finds threatening or when angered. Highly social, communicating via barking, grunts, and ground-stomping. Good hearing.

Domestication & Utility

Easily domesticated, with a mild temperament, making it one of the most valuable pack animals in desert regions:

  • Carrying capacity: 2-3 times its own body weight, using special pack saddles and load-balancing platforms designed to keep cargo level on uneven terrain
  • Speed: its most unusual feature — can run for several days at a time at up to 30 miles per hour, making it especially prized by armies and raiding parties requiring speed and surprise
  • Messenger use: specially-constructed saddles engineered for its sloping back keep a human rider level during rapid multi-day travel
  • Used alongside camels, burros, and horses by caravans and desert dwellers for heavy-load transport
