Direct continuation of A Day in the Underground: Jax's Origin — this is Jax's arrival aboard KVS Aureline and his recruitment into what becomes the Office of Disengineering. See Jax and the Office of Disengineering for the full concept this scene establishes.
Arrival Aboard KVS Aureline
The first thing Jax notices is the silence. Not the absence of sound — there is sound — but none of it argues with anything else. Footsteps don't echo. Voices don't overlap. Music doesn't bleed between spaces. Everything exists inside its own polite boundary. It unnerves him.
The lift doors open without a jolt. No shudder. No complaint from abused hydraulics. Just a soft chime and a wash of warm, curated light.
"Welcome aboard KVS Aureline," says a voice that does not belong to a person. "Please enjoy your stay."
Jax mutters, "I didn't agree to anything."
The floor beneath his boots subtly adjusts its texture as he steps forward. He stops. Looks down. The station noticed him.
The Woman in the Concourse
A woman in a tailored jacket smiles as she passes. "First time?" she asks, kindly. "Is it that obvious?" She laughs. "You're walking like the ground might betray you." / "Habit." / "Well," she says, gesturing at the wide concourse ahead, "it won't. Nothing here does." That's what scares him.
The Atrium
The corridor opens into an atrium that makes his breath catch despite himself. Trees — actual trees — rise through multiple levels. Water moves somewhere unseen but heard, tuned to a frequency that suggests calm without demanding it. Above, the ceiling is glass — or something pretending to be — revealing stars arranged not as they are, but as they are meant to be seen. People drift, not hurry. A child laughs. Somewhere, a string ensemble plays live, though no one seems to be watching them.
Jax rubs the back of his neck. "Okay," he whispers. "I get it."
The Kiosk
A kiosk slides into his peripheral vision. "May I assist you?" / "No." It pauses — just long enough to feel respectful. "Understood. If you require anything, I will already be nearby." / "I hate that," Jax says.
He walks past boutiques whose walls shift as he moves, displaying goods tailored not to demographics, but to him. Tools he didn't know he wanted. Clothing sized perfectly. Food whose smell reaches him before he's hungry. A restaurant host catches his eye. "Hungry?" / "Not yet." / "You will be," she says, smiling, utterly confident.
Invisible Security
Security is invisible. That's worse than visible guards. He can feel it — eyes without faces, systems weighing him and finding him... acceptable. Not trusted. Just acceptable.
The Man by the Koi Pond
At his destination — a corporate operations hub disguised as a garden — he meets the man who forced him up here.
The Man: "You made good time." Jax: "I didn't have a choice." The Man: "Few worthwhile things begin with one." Jax: "You dragged me out of the Underground for this?" The Man: "For perspective."
The man gestures around them. "This station runs itself. Energy distribution anticipates demand. Commerce responds before desire becomes discomfort. Conflict is... rare."
Jax: "And?" The Man: "And yet, we can't innovate fast enough anymore." Jax: "What?" The Man: "Everything works. So no one pushes."
Jax looks at the koi. Perfectly colored. Perfectly spaced. Perfectly meaningless.
Jax: "You ever been below?" The Man (smiling thinly): "Once. It was unpleasant." Jax: "That's the point. Down there, if you don't care, things break. If you don't show up, people notice." The Man: "And here?" Jax (watching a service drone glide past without a sound): "Here, you could disappear for a year and the station would throw you a party when you came back."
The man doesn't deny it.
The Offer
The Man: "Will you take the contract?"
Jax exhales slowly. His hands itch — not with need, but with boredom.
Jax: "For now. But don't mistake this place for strong." The Man: "Oh?" Jax: "It's beautiful. It's clever. It's rich."
He gestures vaguely at the atrium, the trees, the false sky.
Jax: "But it doesn't know how to bleed."
The station lighting subtly shifts — warmer, more reassuring. Jax notices. Of course he does.
That Night
In a room that anticipates his dreams, Jax lies awake longer than he ever does below. Nothing rattles. Nothing drips. Nothing argues. And for the first time in years, he feels truly alone.
