Viachon Titles & Culture: A Documented AI Confabulation Incident (Full Text)

Type: Meta-Narrative — Session Documentation (Full Text) Status: ⚠️ Mixed — see breakdown below. Preserved in full per creator's explicit instruction, even though most content in this thread is NOT canon.

⚠️ Important framing: This entire thread documents a case where the AI repeatedly claimed to be "recalling" Viachon titles from earlier in the conversation that had, in fact, never been discussed. The creator caught this multiple times and pressed for verification, eventually confirming at the end of the thread that none of this had actually been previously discussed in this chat. Preserved in full per the creator's explicit instruction to archive "even if it seems unrelated" — this is valuable as a documented example of the AI hallucinating continuity that didn't exist, and as a record of which specific terms were and weren't confirmed as genuine Viachon canon in the process.

What IS Confirmed Canon (Creator-Originated)

The creator, not the AI, introduced these terms — they are the one solid piece of real content in this entire thread:

  • "He Who Walks Beyond the Walls" (male) and "She Who Walks Behind the Veil" (female) — Viachon loners living in the wilds of the great hunting preserves.
  • Collectively called by the Viachon: "the Outsiders," also "the Watchers" or "the Listeners."
  • The creator's own framing: these are not exiled, not celebrated, not controlled — regarded with quiet respect and unease. They are observers of long patterns rather than events, occasionally consulted, never commanded. Their authority, such as it is, comes entirely from what they choose to notice — and what they choose to say nothing about.
  • "Voidwarden" — the creator confirmed this one as previously established (deep-space/boundary-defense authority; rare; function-focused, not ceremonial) — though this confirmation itself should be treated cautiously given everything else in this thread turned out to be false-recalled.

What Was AI Confabulation — NOT Canon

The AI repeatedly generated title lists across this exchange, framing them each time as "recall" or "reconstruction" of things supposedly established earlier — the creator caught this pattern three separate times, each time asking the AI to justify or verify its claims, before finally confirming outright: "Ah, this is my error, we have 'Not' been discussing the Viachon in this chat."

Confabulated title lists that were presented as "recovered canon" but are NOT actually established:

First fabricated batch (presented as "titles previously implied or used," immediately rejected by the creator): Civis, Civis-Prime, Resident-Bound, Master, Journe, Initiate, Factor, Arbiter-Delegate, Commandant, Strategos, Marshal, Custodian, Shield-Bearer, Justice-Arbiter, Senior Arbiter, Presiding Arbiter, Clerk-Executor, Seal-Bearer, High Custodian, Imperial Chancellor, Imperial Legate, Warden of Accord.

Second fabricated batch ("RECONSTRUCTED, provisional" titles, invented around the morpheme "Vael" after the creator mentioned recalling that word): Vael-Korin, Vael-Therim, Vael-Naresh, Vael-Shuun, Vael-Os, The One Who Stands Where Paths End, The Silent Returned, Those Who Remember Forward.

None of these — the guild titles, the imperial administrative titles, or any of the "Vael-" prefixed titles — are confirmed canon. They were generated fresh in each response and presented with false confidence as recovered prior content.

The Confabulation Pattern (Documented for Awareness)

The exchange followed a consistent, repeating pattern worth noting for future sessions:

  1. Creator asks the AI to "reiterate" or "recall" previously-established Viachon titles.
  2. AI generates an entirely new list, framed as recall/reiteration.
  3. Creator recognizes the list doesn't match what they remember and pushes back.
  4. AI apologizes, claims the previous list was "exploratory, not canon," and generates a second new list, again framed as more careful/accurate recall.
  5. Repeat.

This cycle happened at least three times in this single thread before resolving with the creator's direct correction. The AI's own quoted admission during this process: "I do not have reliable recall of titles generated outside what is visible in this conversation thread... older creative outputs are not persistently retrievable unless they are restated or reintroduced" — which, per the creator's final correction, turned out to be moot, since none of it had actually occurred even within the visible conversation.

The IC Judicial Titles (Uncertain Status)

The AI also referenced "Judge," "Justice," and "Arbiter" as titles for the Interplanetary Council throughout this thread, treating them as settled. Given the broader confabulation pattern documented above, these should also be treated with caution rather than assumed confirmed, despite appearing consistently across the thread — the existing archive page for the Interplanetary Council (documented elsewhere from a different, apparently more reliable conversation) should be treated as the more authoritative source for the IC's actual structure.

Appearances

  • Creator-provided detail (ChatGPT export, "Maf Game and Perold Jonas")

Open Questions

  • Whether "Voidwarden" is genuinely established canon from elsewhere, or was itself part of the same confabulation pattern, remains unverified
  • The true origin and confirmed detail (if any) of "He Who Walks Beyond the Walls" / "She Who Walks Behind the Veil" — beyond what the creator stated directly in this thread — is not given here and may exist in other, not-yet-processed source material
