The Ides of March Offensive: World War 3's Endgame (1979-1987)
Type: Narrative — Canon History, WW3-Era (Full Text) Status: ✅ CANON — merged and settled by creator decision, superseding an earlier conflicting account
Sources: conversations-001.json, conversation #19, "Continent Topography and Climate" (see RAW SOURCE), merged with the offensive's high-level framing from conversations-000.json, conversation #22, "Government to Commercial Shift" (see RAW SOURCE), per creator decision. Direct continuation of The Main Campaign: Blood River and the Siege of Kila Vas. See Perold Jonas for his role throughout.
✅ This page previously described a fog-of-history conflict with the World War 3 timeline page's account of this same offensive (which gave a different date, May 31, 1987, and different tactical framing). The creator has since resolved this: March 15, 1987 is the settled canonical D-Day, and the offensive's shape merges both sources — the timeline page's "3-million-troop amphibious assault on the Desert Empire's western coast, Jonas personally leading an armored assault of millions of mechanized troops out of Kila Vas, with Allied air/space forces destroying Desert Empire industrial and space capacity" is now combined with this page's detailed day-by-day narrative. The May 31, 1987 date and the timeline page's standalone framing are discarded as canon and preserved only as raw/superseded material — see the note on the Government to Commercial Shift RAW SOURCE page.
The Long Stalemate (1978-1987)
Bronson's siege of Kila Vas settles into a grinding, unofficial stalemate that lasts until January 1987. Kila Vas, swollen with millions of war refugees fleeing the continent-wide devastation, becomes one of the largest cities in the world — and a target of near-impossible strategic and tactical value precisely because of that scale.
In the east, by December 1979, General Johnson's forces (Republics of Waon) have captured the continent's entire central region — after honoring the Elves' request not to enter the First Turning, he instead skirts west of the Great Mountains. In spring, several southwest-coast NUN nations allow divisions of Johnson's army to embark by sea (through Desert Empire-controlled waters), landing in two forces to strike north and east. Over the following three years, Johnson's forces grind northward and eastward, capturing over 20% of the total NUN and occupying the entire region north of the Circle Mountains except the far southeastern corner — which holds. Jonas dispatches elite forces to contest the advance.
Strategic Overreach (1984-1985)
By mid-1985 — though he'd suspected it a year earlier — Jonas concludes the Desert Empire and its Republics of Waon ally have reached a state of strategic overreach. Desert Empire supply lines now snake thousands of miles through open desert; the Republics have been continuously battered by air strikes and deep-force raids against their military infrastructure. Jonas pours forces into the central region: a two-pronged amphibious strike on the coast north of Kila Vas succeeds in pushing Republics forces out and returning the coast to the Empire, with Imperial troops pouring into the beachheads. In the east, under General Bylimor, EUN forces press their own counteroffensive.
Jonas's Preparation
By January 1987, Jonas is ready. Years of building and training have turned an army of millions into an elite fighting force unlike anything the world had seen — new equipment, highly trained troops, aircraft, and even combat spacecraft in the thousands, with supply caches strategically and covertly hidden across the continent in friendly nations. He sets D-Day for March 15th — the Ides of March. Jonas believes the Republics will likely surrender once they grasp the scale of the coming force; he holds no such illusions about the Desert Empire itself, expecting it to fight until decisively defeated under commanders like Androve, Bronson, Faraday, and Johnson — men other men would willingly follow to their deaths. He estimates the final push could take months, possibly over a year.
March 15th: The Ides of March
The offensive opens as a single, massive, coordinated Allied operation. A 3-million-troop amphibious force lands on the Desert Empire's western coast, striking the 5 States Region between Kila Vas and Wrosjcec — territory held by Faraday for years. Simultaneously, Jonas personally leads an armored assault of millions of mechanized troops out of Kila Vas, while a two-pronged Eastern United Nations force attacks the southern and eastern states of the Republics of Waon. Allied air and space forces provide the umbrella for all three thrusts, systematically destroying Desert Empire industrial capacity and space assets to secure total aerial and orbital superiority.
At 4 AM the amphibious forces land and, meeting little resistance, drive rapidly inland. In the east, the EUN's two-headed force rolls into the Republics' eastern and southern borders. On March 16th, the 5 States Region — under the supreme command of Admiral Tinin in Wrosjcec — surrenders to Jonas, though Wrosjcec itself does not. Bronson in the north and Androve in the southwest each independently brace for what they believe is an inevitable assault against their own dug-in positions (Androve, wondering briefly whether the Fox Den will survive). At Maiha, Desert Empire command — Prof. Johnson, General Dreksa, and Emperor Jon Medaris — studies the map, puzzled: the strike against the Republics makes sense, but why the amphibious landing at the 5 States, a region with little remaining strategic value now that the Empire dominates the sea lanes?
March 22nd-27th: Withdrawal and Air Campaign
On March 22nd, Johnson begins withdrawing his forces from the Republics back into the Desert Empire; four days later, this triggers a rout of the Republics' southern forces under EUN pressure from the east. At 3 AM on March 27th, massive air campaigns launch across the Desert Empire and against Androve's forces in the southwest — a huge raid from Tranchon and Peplle buries the Desert Empire's underground factories at Anais beneath hundreds of tons of rubble, with the campaign continuing for days as part of the broader Allied effort to dismantle Desert Empire industrial and space capacity.
The Encirclement of Bronson
Jonas's other surprise: from the foothills of the Republics, the clans of PejSha and his brother King Rudy attack both Johnson's straggling forces as they retreat and the rearward areas of Bronson's own forces. Bronson launches several strategic counterattacks against Jonas's forward elements, but Jonas is moving too fast. The purpose of the amphibious 5 States landing finally becomes clear to everyone: Bronson is now encircled on three sides. Though more a psychological distraction than a direct military threat, the effect is total — Bronson cannot retreat west into the 5 States or east into the Republics; only south remains, and even that route is increasingly threatened by King Rudy and PejSha.
Bronson fights on, even gaining ground in places, but loses it again under constant pressure. By May, Jonas has advanced 1,000 miles south-southeast into the desert, capturing several of the northern central oil fields. By July, Bronson has retreated another 700 miles.
The Collapse (August-October 1987)
By August, Johnson's forces reach the Desert Empire near the ruins of Spartania, hoping to reinforce either Bronson to the north or Androve to the west. In Wrosjcec, the Wrosjcec Kaolsan quietly declare neutrality — an assertion neither side's command believes they have any legal standing to make ("They can't declare 'neutrality'!"). Faraday and Tinin are forced into further retreat.
By early October, the outcome is inevitable. Androve has retreated eastward across the desert to just west of former Spartania. Johnson has moved further south to army headquarters at Sentois. Another round of air strikes further buries the underground factories in the east. Most of Admiral Tinin's fleet is caught in the open sea by the Empire's Royal Imperial Navy and sent to the bottom — Tinin himself goes missing, presumed lost at sea. Bronson has retreated 3,000 miles to within 400 miles of Spartania, pressed from the west and north by Jonas and from the east by King Rudy and PejSha — consistent with Jonas's forces having by this point penetrated 3,000 miles into Desert Empire territory. At Maiha, Prof. Johnson and Executive General Dreksa face the decision: continue fighting, or request a ceasefire to open peace negotiations — and if the latter, how to sell that to Emperor Medaris.
The Desert Empire declares a unilateral ceasefire in October 1987; the peace treaty is signed the following month, November 1987 — see the World War 3 timeline page for the war's official close.
Open Questions
- The final ceasefire negotiation itself (how Medaris was ultimately persuaded, and the peace treaty's actual terms) was not captured in either source conversation.
- ⚠️ A third, conflicting account has since surfaced in conversation #76 ("Sci-fi Constitution Guide") — D-Day at 0400, March 14, 1987, a 2,500-mile shoreline landing, roughly 1 million troops, staged across 5 phases. This has not been merged into the account above; flagged for creator review. See RAW SOURCE for the unreconciled detail.
