See The Abrah-Jahlulsban Commentary Notes for the existing in-universe scholarly account of this same event, written from a centuries-later academic perspective. This page provides the actual real-time dramatized scenes as the events unfolded in 2006, with named participants — complementary to, not conflicting with, the existing commentary.
Background
The Republic of Abrah and Jahulsban — formerly two separate states, the Abrah Federation and the Jahulsban Union — had been neighbors for over 300 years: frequent trade, state visits, common travel and tourism, and communal academic/business exchange (professors and administrators of one nation frequently guest lecturing, researching, or advising within the other). They united into a single Republic 25 years prior to the Constitutional Conference, sending one joint delegation.
Scale: 213 inhabited planets, nearly 2 trillion total population, technologically on par with (in some fields ahead of) Kila Vas, the largest and most powerful military force of any potential Confederate member state, and an economy/standard of living comparable to Kila Vas's own.
The Decision to Split (Shortly After May 2006)
Shortly after the Constitutional Conference concludes, the Abrah and Jahulsban delegation returns home and its leadership agrees to separate once more — doubling their representational count within MACOFS and thus their influence on its proceedings. Technically no constitutional prohibition existed against it, but Jonas, Magrep, and many others saw it as, if not immoral, at least deeply unethical political gamesmanship.
Jonas's Rage: The War Room Scene
Jonas is enraged — only the fifth time in his long career — and even Tammi Li cannot immediately calm him. The Republic had been widely perceived as the most open and transparent in its governance, mature and stable, second only to Kila Vas economically, with a fair and honest judicial system and the largest, most powerful military of any delegation's home state. Jonas had relied on and confided in their delegates personally.
Jonas (slamming his hands on the table): "To gamify a system that they themselves helped create! Through endless nights of heated debate, months of discussions and deliberations... and they do this?"
Tammi Li: "Jonas, I know this feels like a betrayal — especially from a nation you trusted above all others. But politics will always find cracks to exploit. We must think strategically, not emotionally."
Magrep: "It's not just politics. It's a deliberate attempt to fracture MACOFS from within. Abrah and Jahulsban aren't just splitting — they're doubling their voices, their influence. They are gaming the very system they helped build."
Jonas: "I confided in their delegates. Trusted them. And they stabbed us in the back."
The Abrah-Jahulsban Perspective
Ambassador Lina Vrexel (Abrah) and Minister Kael Doran (Jahulsban) meet privately, framing the decision not as gamesmanship but as wise, professional policymaking:
Lina Vrexel: "We came together barely a generation ago. Twenty- five years in galactic terms is nothing. Our peoples still retain strong identities, cultures, even loyalties that haven't fully merged... It's wise policy making, not gamesmanship. Our joint vote was one voice; now it's two — that means better advocacy for our planets, better protection of our interests."
Kael Doran: "We are not fracturing the Confederation. We're strengthening our position within it... Jonas and Magrep see betrayal. I see a mature nation adapting to political realities. Unity does not mean uniformity. Sometimes, true unity requires respecting difference."
The Backlash and Crisis Response (June 22, 2006)
The scale of galaxy-wide backlash surprises the Abrah-Jahulsban leadership. They mobilize teams to visit every Constitutional Conference participant nation to explain their decision, while the conference delegates themselves return to Kila Vas to meet Jonas directly — hoping to convince him this strengthens rather than fractures MACOFS, offering him "two voting blocs rather than one" for future close votes.
The Turning Point: Junior Advisor Keth Aralin's Argument
At the June 22 meeting, a junior advisor, Keth Aralin, raises a point that gives everyone pause:
Keth: "The Republic of Abrah and Jahulsban is... enormous. By any objective measure. They are technologically on par with Kila Vas — arguably ahead in several fields. They field the largest and most capable unified military force of any potential Confederation member... They represent two hundred and thirteen inhabited planets. Nearly two trillion people."
Magrep: "Yes. That is precisely the problem."
Keth: "Or... it may be precisely the opportunity... If Abrah and Jahulsban remain unified, their influence within the Confederation would be overwhelming. Not hostile — perhaps — but decisive. In close votes, their position could effectively determine outcomes... That concentration of influence would place every other member state — large and small — permanently in their shadow."
Tammi Li: "You're suggesting dilution of power."
Keth: "I'm suggesting balance."
Keth argues that as two sovereign states, their combined influence doesn't disappear — it becomes negotiable: one may support a proposal while the other hesitates, opening room for persuasion and coalition-building that a single monolithic bloc would never allow. "No single state, however benevolent, should be able to dominate the Confederation simply by virtue of scale."
Magrep: "So you're saying that what feels like betrayal... may actually prevent hegemony."
Tammi Li: "And that unity enforced at the top often produces fracture below."
Jonas (after a long silence): "...If this is true, then stopping their separation may do more harm than allowing it."
Jonas (finally): "Then we watch. We allow the division. And we ensure no one else mistakes scale for entitlement... And we make certain the Confederation never belongs to any single world — no matter how admirable."
